The fourth trimester

What is a postpartum doula?

Rested new mother cuddling her newborn

A postpartum doula is a trained, non-medical support person who cares for the whole family in the weeks after birth, often called the fourth trimester. While your doctor or midwife focuses on clinical care, a postpartum doula focuses on you: your rest, your recovery, your feeding goals, your emotions, and your confidence as a parent. Think of it as having an experienced, calm, judgment-free helper in your home, day or night.

Why it matters

The fourth trimester is when many new mothers feel the most exhausted, isolated, and overwhelmed. Your body is healing, you're learning to feed a newborn around the clock, and sleep is scarce. Extended family isn't always nearby. Having steady, knowledgeable support during these weeks helps you heal physically, protects your mental health, and lets you actually enjoy bonding with your baby.

What support looks like

  • Rest so your body can heal
  • Help with breastfeeding, bottle feeding or pumping
  • Someone who notices when you're struggling emotionally and connects you to help
  • Hands-on newborn care coaching so you feel confident
  • A nourished, calmer home

More moms attended their postpartum checkup with doula support: 5 to 6 more out of every 100.Source: American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, 2024

A 2026 systematic review in JAMA Network Open found doula care most consistently linked to lower maternal anxiety and better breastfeeding starts.

Doulas provide non-medical support and do not replace care from your doctor or midwife.

Overnight Newborn Care

$50/hour 8-hour minimum

Overnight shifts typically run 8 hours (about 10 PM to 6 AM), one to seven nights a week, beginning once you and baby are home. While you sleep, your doula cares for your newborn with calm, attentive hands, and bring baby to you for feedings when you're nursing.

Safe sleep, every night

We follow the American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep guidelines: baby on their back, in their own crib or bassinet, every time.

Feeding, your way

Breastfeeding, bottle feeding, pumping, or a mix of all three. We support your choices and help nighttime feeds feel calmer and more manageable.

A gentler morning

While baby rests, your doula washes bottles and pump parts, folds baby laundry, and leaves you notes on how the night went, so your morning starts easier.

Includes nighttime feedings, diapering, and soothing.

Why Her Doula Wellness exists

Our Story

Her Doula Wellness was founded by a mother who knows, firsthand, how fragile and overwhelming the weeks after birth can be.

She gave birth to her first child alone in a hospital room, with no one beside her to hold her hand, speak up for her, or simply remind her she was doing well. In the weeks that followed, she quietly carried postpartum depression on her own.

Her second birth brought even more. Her newborn stayed behind in the NICU while she handled nearly everything by herself, and just one week after giving birth she had to return to work. A week after coming home, she began losing blood, so much that she was rushed back to the hospital and needed a blood transfusion. Through it all, she battled anxiety, often in silence.

As she healed, she reflected on everything she had been through and made a promise to herself: no other mother should have to walk that road alone. That promise became Her Doula Wellness.

“No mother should face such a vulnerable and sacred moment, of her own rebirth and new life, alone.”

Today, Her Doula Wellness walks alongside families across metro Atlanta through the fourth trimester, so every mother feels seen, supported, and cared for.

FAQ

Questions families ask.

What does a postpartum doula do?

Non-medical emotional, physical, and practical support after birth.

When should I book?

The second trimester is ideal.

Do you serve my area?

Metro Atlanta. Ask about travel outside the perimeter.

What's the difference between a postpartum doula and a night nurse or nanny?

A postpartum doula cares for the whole family, especially the birthing parent's recovery, feeding, and emotional well-being, alongside newborn care. Our doulas are non-medical, and we work to build your confidence rather than replace you.

Is my deposit refundable?

The 25% deposit is non-refundable because it holds your dates on our calendar. It's applied toward your total.

Can I use HSA/FSA?

Many families can. I provide itemized receipts, and your doctor may need to write a letter of medical necessity, so check with your plan.
